Hi, I'm J Maher. Wander is a hobby project of mine, built nights and weekends from the SF Bay Area.
The story
I love taking long walks through cities I've never visited. The kind of day where I leave in the morning with no real plan, follow whatever street looks interesting for the next seven or eight hours, and end up roughly back where I started — phone full of photos and a route that traces a giant lopsided loop on the map.
Apple's Photos app does a wonderful thing: it shows you where a geotagged photo was taken, dropping pins on a map. But it doesn't tell you the story of how you got from one pin to the next — the route, the order, the distance covered. All of that lives in your photo metadata, never quite surfaced.
Wander pulls it out. Pick the geotagged photos from a journey, and the app draws the route between every stop in capture order — locked to real streets and trails — then lets you replay it on the map. It started with walks; as of 1.5 it maps any kind of journey, from a hike to a road trip to a flight. It's the app I wanted to use after every trip.
My day job
By day I'm a systems administrator. Wander is what I tinker with on nights and weekends — equal parts an excuse to learn iOS development and a love letter to the kind of walks I take.
